Jeff Buckley – “Hallelujah”
While this may not be my absolute favorite Jeff Buckley song, I had to include it in the list. Jeff Buckley sings this song with such powerful emotion; it is a very soulful and touching piece. While keeping the painful sounds of Leonard Cohen’s lonely Rock N’ Roll melodrama Jeff Buckley gives me goose bumps with his rendition of one of the most classic, folk songs of all time.
Nick Drake – “Pink Moon”
When I first heard “Pink Moon” I was so instantly moved by it that I wanted to meet Nick Drake and write with him and imagined myself becoming his new best friend... Problem was that he had passed away some thirty years ago. This track was recorded in 1972, but to me it could have been recorded last week. His unique guitar style is unlike anyone I've ever heard.
Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers – “Learning to Fly”
This track has been on my iPod since the day that I bought it and I don’t think I will ever take it off. With “Learning to Fly”, Tom Petty arguably perfects the timeless American rock sound of freedom - I can feel it when I listen to this song. It just enables me to clear my mind and my thoughts.
Sigur Rós – “Festival”
I love the sonic landscapes they use to pull you into the song. “Festival” is such a pure and interesting track that completely captivates me each time I listen to it. Sigur Rós is such an innovative group that has created a work of art beyond comparison. This song is very soothing to me, I enjoy it after a long, hard day as a way to relax and unwind.
The Clash – “London Calling”
Talk about a musical moment, to me this song made such a statement of what was going on in the world.
Radiohead – “Paranoid Android”
Radiohead has created a sound that is completely their own and can only be described as genius. “Paranoid Android” is a song capable of elevating me to a level of thought and emotion that provides an outlet that I crave from modern music. Radiohead has challenged musicians to break the mold of what has become poplar music.
Björk – “Earth Intruders”
I love the sound of her voice, it's that ethereal sound I love. And she plays with it. She is never afraid to take risks - with all of her music. She pushes boundaries, that's true art.
David Bowie – “China Girl”
This is a timeless, classic track that I will never get tired of hearing. It doesn’t matter what I am going through in my life at the time, this song always speaks to me. David Bowie’s talent is indescribable.
Prince – “Alphabet St.”
One of my all time favorite artists, this song is so full of the funky, soulful, sexy grooves he's famous for. His music has always been so inspirational to me and has encouraged me to become more creative with my music.
Christina Aguilera – “Beautiful”
In all honesty, I just love everything that Linda has done. This is a very empowering song, and not just for women. It is so well written and pieced together that I have nothing but respect and admiration for this track. No one could sing “Beautiful” except Christina Aguilera, her voice just captivates the emotion behind this song, making it irresistible to listeners.
Elton John – “Rocket Man (I Think It’s Going to Be a Long, Long Time)”
Elton John has been a major influence in my career and I have always felt so much strength and inspiration from his music. I strive to be as imaginative and inventive with my career as Elton John has been. This song is a classic that I will always love to hear; the melody and rhythm in “Rocket Man” are just so invigorating and full of life.
Dave Alvin – “King of California”
Definitely one of the great American songwriters and storytellers. As a Canadian, I fell in love with America by listening to Dave's music. This song tells a story as if set many years ago, the story of an American Hero, at least in his mind. Dave sings it as if he is actually that person as the song weaves through love, misery, truth and the death, and you feel each emotion throughout.
Coldplay – “Clocks”
What can I say, this song is phenomenal. The piano riff is hypnotic.
Guns N’ Roses – “Paradise City”
Gun N’ Roses embodied the spirit of the 80’s in the new bread of rock music that has been such an influential part of music history. This track has a freedom and simplicity that slightly broke the mold prior to its day while giving credence to the entire structure of the essence of Rock N’ Roll. I will never get tired of “Paradise City”
Joni Mitchell – “California”
This flawless piece of music makes it impossible for me to keep this off the list. This masterpiece, from one of the most remarkable folk musicians of all time, amazes me more each time I hear it. Joni Mitchell really puts her soul into her music – you can feel it, and I really admire that about her.
